Samuel Augustus Mitchell was a teacher, geographer and printer of maps. His firm, located in Philadelphia, produced thousands of maps each year. He has been called the first great American cartographer.
As Brigham Young made preparations to leave Nauvoo, he had consulted John C. Fremont's map. When he heard of the publication of this Mitchell map, Young promptly requested that six copies be sent to him.
