NB: E-Mail von Dr. Nikolaus Gatter, Erster Vorsitzender der Varnhagen Gesellschaft, erklärt: "[while the holdings of the] great Varnhagen Collection [were presumed] lost in World War II, they were found 1977 in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska, Cracovia. Muir: "The [Syracuse University Library] catalogue includes the 430 manuscripts collected by Ranke himself and purchased by Syracuse University in 1887; the bibliographic, personal, and family material that accompanied the purchase; and Ranke and Graves family papers acquired since the original purchase... The manuscript materials...constitute a portion of Leopold von Ranke's private library, which also includes some 17,000 volumes of books and approximately 4,000 pamphlets. This library has fortunately been preserved as a discrete collection and historical artifact at Syracuse University."
