Major Scholarly Presses of Western Europe
As Held in One Medium-Sized North American University Library

A study made in conjunction with an address given by Richard Hacken on The Current State of European Studies in North America and of Scholarly Publishing in Western Europe at the WESS Preconference in San Francisco, June 26, 1997.

The following are the "Top Ten" publishers from each country of Western Europe, ranked by numbers of monograph imprints in the Brigham Young University library.

Here comes the fine print:

Andorra and San Marino are excluded. Note that the publisher rankings on the list may be quite different for your institution depending on your unique collecting profile. The total numbers of titles held by a given publisher (valid as of March 1997) are supplied for internal comparisons only. Not all BYU library holdings have been retrospectively converted, hence some early publications may be underrepresented. Not all publishers listed are still publishing, hence some phantom suppliers may be overrepresented. Hits were counted after searching keywords in the local Notis system for both city and publisher in the 260 field, e.g. "k=elsevier.260. and amsterdam.260." (Note that this includes co-published titles, e.g., Elsevier imprints of Amsterdam and New York, but does not include titles published only abroad, e.g., Elsevier imprints of New York alone.) It's possible I've missed a publisher or two, since searching by country code was impossible and searches had to be by city. It would be helpful for a similar survey to be done for library holdings on a national basis, but I saw no way to do a comparable search in OCLC or RLIN. -- Richard Hacken
