Creating a Subject Heading + Subdivision record
Please make a brief Subject Heading + Subdivision record for all unauthorized headings on
records you catalog or update in Unicorn. (This applies only to free-floating or geographic
subdivisions that we would not have established in NOTIS but are establishing in Unicorn for the
unauthorized heading to work correctly.)
- Check the authority file for the record.
- If record not found follow the script to Create or Duplicate the record. (I have found that
at times it is faster to Duplicate the record: (example: you have the record Utah|x
History, and you are creating a record for Utah |x History |x Bibliography.)
- Fixed Fields only the following need to be checked:
- DIR/IND Geographic subdivision must be decided from the last subdivision
(examples: Crime |v Poetry would be blank because Poetry can not be subdivided
Geographically, however Crime |z United States would be "n" because United
State it is not applicable, and Crime |x Education would be an "i" because
Education can be subdivided geographically.)
- AUTHTYP will be an "f" (Established heading and subdivision)
- NAME_US will be a "b"
- SUBJ_US will be a "a"
- SER_US will be a "b"
- Variable fields you must have:
- Add 040 field with UPB|cUPB
- Add a 1xx field with the heading you are creating
- Add 690 with your initials, the date (9-23-98) (Required)
- To the 690 field add the resource used to establish the record.
- AACR2
- SCM (Subject Cataloging Manual)
- Free (Free-Floating Subdivisions: An Alphabetical Index)
- d/i (using the D/I field of the basic record)
- Record number of a record (when you use another record to
establish the heading)
- Genre/form (no need to list in 690 because information is already
in 1xx field.)
- Other
