Theses & Dissertations

Follow this policy when describing unpublished academic theses issued by BYU or other institutions. The term thesis here should be understood also to cover dissertations, field projects, research papers, honor theses and other papers written to fulfill requirements for a degree or other scholastic recognition. Do not apply this policy when describing published editions of works originally presented as theses.

Instructions:

In general, describe originals, reproductions or copies or academic theses as you would regular printed books. (See also the instructions for cataloging Photocopied Reproductions for copies issued by a non-academic agency such as UMI.) Use the USMARC format for books. Follow AACR2rev chapter 2 for the formulation of descriptive data with the exception of the 260 field; enter only the date in field 260 (subfield $c). Correspondingly, use xx in field 008/15-17 (Notis PLACE, RLIN CP) for the place of publication. Include a 502 field in the description with a note identifying the degree and the institution granting it.
