BACKGROUND
Local histories play an important part in historical and genealogical research. This project identifies local histories about five counties (Gilmer, Harrison, Lewis, Marion and Monongalia) in North Central West Virginia that are located in part of the geographic area covered by the early Monongalia County. Each library in this five county area was surveyed, either by searching their catalog or by visiting the library, to determine the extent of their local history collection concerning these five counties. In addition, the collections at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Family History Library in Salt Lake City and the Utah County Regional Family History Library located at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah were surveyed.

A brief bibliographical citation for each history has been provided. If subject headings were included in the record they have been listed. Codes indicate the libraries holding the histories (see list of library codes). The list is limited to monographs. While every effort was made to make this list as comprehensive as possible, the compiler is certain that it is not complete and welcomes any additions, corrections or amendments.

Many thanks to librarians who cooperated with this project and helped to identify qualifying works. Thank you to Emily who sent the location codes from the WV Library Commission. I have revised and added a few of the codes but have mainly used those provided. Special thanks to Brandon McArthur and Scott Elldredge of the BYU Library Digital Imaging Office for getting this online. Thank you also to Beverly Norton who has served as mentor for this project and for all those at the Harold B. Lee Library, BYU, who have assisted and encouraged me with this Union List of Local Histories.
