  • How do I take the Library Audio Tour?

    The Library tour takes 40 minutes and will familiarize you with the location of library resources, including the reference desks.
    You can take the tour:
    1. On CD, available in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) on Level 4 of the library.
    2. As an MP3 file, available at http://www.lib.byu.edu/instruction/tour/ or right-click here

  • How do I access the SMART Library Tutorial?

    The tutorial teaches you how to conduct efficient library research and how to use the computer research tools here at BYU. It takes 1½ -2 hours to complete. Your teacher will give you the specifcs of when you should complete each part of the tutorial.

    To Take the tutorial:
    1. Log into Blackboard using your Route Y Net ID and Password.
    2. Under "My Courses," click on the "Library Research Skills" course.
    3. Click the "SMART Tutorial" button. Or you can access it directly at http://net.lib.byu.edu/tutorial/smart/

  • How do I access the assignments that correspond with the SMART Tutorial?

    1. Log into Blackboard using your Route Y Net ID and Password.
    2. Under "My Courses," click the "Library Research Skills" course.
    3. Click the "Smart Assignments" button.

  • How do I access the tests for the Library Audio Tour?

    1. Log into Blackboard using your Route Y Net ID and Password.
    2. Under "My Courses," click the "Library Research Skills" course.
    3. Click the "Audio Tour Test" button.

  • What do I do if I took the Audio Tour or Tutorial Tests in a previous class?

    If you took the Library Tests within the past four years, you do not need to take them again. The scores will be automatically uploaded into your Blackboard account for your teacher to see.

  • How do I get help before/after my Library Sessions?

    The library is designed to provide research help to you throughout your entire college career. The following are some ways to get further research help.

    1. Open Research Labs - Receive help from a trained Library TA on research assignments
    - Tues-Thurs, 6-8 p.m., 2231 HBLL
    2. Reference Desks
    Several reference desks are located throughout the library. Student and full-time employees staff these desks and are there to answer your questions. Most desks specialize in certain topic areas. To see the desk most related to your assignment click here.
    3. Step-by-Step Guides
    These guides take you "step-by-step" through the research process on a certain topic and inform of resources available to complete each step. These guides review a lot of the same material that was covered in your library sessions.

  • First-Year Writing

  • What do I need to do to fullfill the library requirements for a First-Year Writing course?

    1. Take the Library audio tour and online test.
    2. Take the Library research skills tutorial and online test.
    3. Attend two library sessions with your class during class time (These are scheduled by your instructor)

  • Advanced Writing

  • What do I need to do to fulfill the library requirements for an Advanced Writing course?

    1. Make sure you have completed the library audio tour and tutorial and the corresponding online test and assignments. (often completed during English 150)
    2. Fill out the AW Session Registration Form and check e-mail for your assigned session.
    3. Attend the library session that you are assigned. This session will focus on your major and give you the information you will need to help you through the rest of your program.

  • How do I register for an Advanced Writing Library Session?

    1. To begin the registration process, go to the AW Library Instruction Session Registration System. Completely fill out the form and submit it within the first 2 weeks of the semester (first week if it is a term).
    2. Sessions are scheduled during a limited time period each semester/term. The times are finalized after receiving feedback from students regarding when they are available to come.

  • How will I know what session to attend?

    1. After filling out the form you will receive an e-mail detailing the day/time/place of your specific session. This e-mail will be sent one week after the registration deadline. If you do not receive an e-mail please contact Library_Instruction@byu.edu

  • What happens in the Advanced Library Instruction Sessions?

    In the Advanced Writing library instruction session you will receive a 50 minute introduction to the important resources (databases and books) and skills needed to successfully complete a research paper in your major. The session is a great place to ask questions about your research and receive individual help from the subject librarian.

  • What happens if I miss my Session?

    It is important that you attend your assigned session. If you are unable to attend, please contact us as soon as possible to reschedule. If you wait too long you will miss all of the sessions available that semester. We can still help you set up a time to meet with the librarian and receive individual instruction, but no credit will be given.
