Hausen, General Max Klemens von. (1846-1922). Hausen commanded the Third Army in the opening months of the war, acting on the Western Front, where his pressure on the French Fifth Army's right at Charleroi forced General Lanrezac to withdraw (22-23 August 1914). Hausen's advance, in concert with von Bulow's Second and Duke Albrecht's Fourth Army, brought his troops to the attack against Foch's Ninth Army during the Marne (5-9 September 1914). von Bulow's withdrawal exposed his eastern flank, and caused Hausen to retreat from this point, and after the German restoration of the line at the Aisne, Hausen was relieved of command.
